Dr. Arthur F. Gmitro is a Professor of Medical Imaging and Optical Sciences at The University of Arizona. He is also a member of the Graduate Interdisciplinary Program in Biomedical Engineering. Dr. Gmitro received his PhD in Optical Sciences from the University of Arizona in 1982. Before returning to the UA as a faculty member in 1987, he was an Assistant Professor of Diagnostic Radiology at Yale University. Dr. Gmitro has been involved in medical imaging research for over 30 years and has published more than 60 papers on a variety of topics in medical imaging. He is the recipient of the Rudolph Kingslake award from SPIE (Society of Photooptical Instrumentation Engineers) and the Francois Erbsmann prize from IPMI (Information Processing in Medical Imaging). Dr Gmitro’s major areas of research are in Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Biomedical Optical Imaging. He has done fundamental work in the development of these technologies and directs an active research program in both areas. Dr. Gmitro is the Director of the NIH supported Training Program in Biomedical Imaging and Spectroscopy and Leader of the Cancer Imaging Program.
